Gay Marriage in Northern Ireland

With the latest vote by the Northern Irish parliament on the legalisation of gay marriage it seems that they just will not change their position. There was some progress as this time the vote gained the majority for the first time, after failing to do so on a previous four occasions.  The vote did not pass, however, as it was blocked by the Democratic Unionist Party.

The DUP,¬†currently the most powerful party in Northern Ireland, deployed a ‘petition of concern’ which meant that the proposal would need a cross-community majority to progress, which it did not.

One of the main problems is that the politicians seem to be out of touch with the people that they are representing. As the singer Elton John stated, if put to a public vote the proposal would surely win out.

Although this seems to be a step in the right direction is does seem to be a strange phenomenon that it has taken this long for them to get even this far. With gay marriage now legal even in Texas (of all places) it seems ridiculous that Northern Ireland will be playing catch-up.
