Review: Grillstock

Grillstock is a chain of five restaurants, with two locally in Bristol (on the Triangle and at Saint Nicholas Market) and ones in Bath, Leicester and Walthamstow. Grillstock, as the name suggests, specialises in grilled meats, offering ribs, burgers and pulled pork and other meat-based products.

I visited the Triangle branch and was instantly impressed by the aesthetic of the restaurant. There was one long table down the middle  to allow groups of any size to be easily seated and the walls were adorned with posters and artwork. The kitchen is located at the end of the table, giving the restaurant an intimate feel.

The interior of the restaurant

I was eating dinner quite early: the restaurant had not yet filled up and as a result the food arrived very quickly. I paid at the same time as ordering my meal, allowing me to easily depart after finishing, which I can see would be very useful at peak times.

I ordered a Smokestack Burger: a 5oz burger with pulled pork, melted cheese and pickles. It was perfectly cooked and the pork was a unique addition. I have been informed that their babyback ribs are also very tasty. Both meals came with house fries, perfectly cooked with a delicious seasoning. This made the chips much better than average and I would recommend a visit to Grillstock for these alone.

My burger

My burger, containing cheese and pulled pork

One item on the menu caught my eye, the Grand Champion. Grillstock offers a free T-shirt to anyone who can eat the £40 meal of “pulled pork, sliced brisket, half a chicken, a full rack of babyback ribs plus mac ‘n’ cheese, chilli cheese fries, house pickles & slaw” within an hour. I will definitely be returning to attempt the challenge.

Grillstock also run the annual Grillstock Festival at Bristol Harbourside, which is described as “a full blown weekend of meat, music and mayhem”. Having eaten the food at Grillstock, I am sure that the festival would be worth visiting, especially with the very high calibre of the food on offer at the restaurant.

The ribs and chips

Grillstock is an excellent restaurant offering some of the best grilled meat that I have ever had. I urge anyone who enjoys burgers and ribs to visit, especially if the winter weather has left you dreaming of a summer’s BBQ.
