Edward Píška in conversation with Liam Fox MP

Recently, I spoke with Liam Fox, Conservative MP for North Somerset and Secretary of State for International Trade. Mr Fox has represented the area for the last 25 years and won the 2017 election with a 17,000 majority.

We covered a wide range of topics, starting with his specialism: international trade. We discussed his experience of creating the Department for International Trade from scratch last year, and he described how the future of trade lies beyond Europe and stressed the importance of growing markets, as well as acknowledging how Europe and Britain would still benefit from trade in the post-Brexit world. I also sought his opinion on the gathering “Moggmentum”.

We then touched on issues much closer to home, in his North Somerset constituency. Bearing in mind the quaint life, affluence and good standards of living within North Somerset, he suggested that perhaps North Somerset contends with problems that some other areas of the country would actually quite like to have! He cited issues close to him – local transport, healthcare and housing – and detailed his thoughts on tackling local skills shortages and the practice of land banking.

Finally, I enquired about wider issues in UK politics, including the prudence of Theresa May calling a general election, whether our politics is increasingly hate-filled, and how the Conservatives are going to win back voters.
