Olivia Rodrigo from High School musical to Chart Topping Hits

On the 8th of January 2021 Olivia released ‘Drivers License’ her debut single.

This is a classic breakup ballad sharing similarities to many of Taylor Swifts early hits, so it is unsurprising that it received such huge success. However, Olivia’s Spotify stats are incredible for a previously unheard of artist, relatively speaking. Gaining the most streams for a non-holiday song in a day (15.17m), before reaching 100m streams — the fastest song in the platform’s history to do so. This wasn’t her only success though, with Olivia’s album ‘SOUR’ which was released on May 14, 2021. In the UK, Sour landed atop the UK Albums Chart with 51,000 units, eclipsing Foo Fighters for the biggest opening-week for an album in 2021.

Where did this success come from? Olivia played the role of Nini Salazar-Roberts on the Disney+ series High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. So, its fair to say that Olivia has fallen into the classic Disney star turned teen idol. Since it’s conception in 1955, The Mickey Mouse Club has launched the careers of child stars turned teen idols in almost every generation. So, part of Olivia’s success can be attributed to her Disney career.

Yet it’s unfair to place all her success just on her Disney origins. Olivia is a very talented singer with her appearances on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and the ‘BRIT Awards’ demonstrating her impressive vocals without the need for autotune.

TikTok has arguably played the most important role in Olivia’s success with her ‘good 4 u’ sound bringing millions of views to TikTok videos. This really shows the power TikTok holds over pop-culture at the moment, with other stars like Bella Poarch receiving similar levels of success compared to Olivia through high levels of TikTok clout.

Olivia’s success is undoubtedly incredible with record breaking stats and an incredible voice. It demonstrates the power of Gen Z’s likes and TikTok trends. It does seem that Olivia may just be the new  Taylor Swift. This is no bad thing however, every generation of teens have their pop-idols and Olivia seems to be that to the teenagers of today. Even Olivia is seemingly shocked with her surge of fame.

“Oh my gosh,” being  the best way 17-year-old Olivia Rodrigo can sum up her life right now. I am sure we will see a lot of success from Olivia Rodrigo in the future, and for a 18 year-old her success is incredible.
